AWOL: Adaptive Write Optimizations in Linux

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Operating system memory managers fail to consider the population of read versus write pages in the buffer pool and the outstanding I/O requests when writing dirty pages to disk or network file systems. This leads to bursty I/O patterns, which stall processes reading data and reduce the efficiency of disk and file systems. We address these limitations by adaptively allocating memory between write buffering and read caching and by writing dirty pages to disk opportunistically before the operating system submits them for writeback. We implement and evaluate our methods within the Linux operating system and show performance gains of more than 30% for mixed read/write workloads.

Efficient Virtualization on Embedded Power Architecture

Power Architecture R © processors are popular and widespread on embedded systems, and such platforms are increasingly being used to run virtual machines [11, 22]. While the Power Architecture meets the Popek-and-Goldberg virtualization requirements for traditional trap-and-emulate style virtualization, the performance overhead of virtualization remains high. For example, workloads exhibiting a ...

Mitigating Sync Amplification for Copy-on-write Virtual Disk

Copy-on-write virtual disks (e.g., qcow2 images) provide many useful features like snapshot, de-duplication, and full-disk encryption. However, our study uncovers that they introduce additional metadata for block organization and notably more disk sync operations (e.g., more than 3X for qcow2 and 4X for VMDK images). To mitigate such sync amplification, we propose three optimizations, namely pe...

All page sharing is equal, but some sharing is more equal than others Benchmarking of Kernel Samepage Merging and an Adaptive Page Sharing Technique

Content based memory sharing in virtualized environments has been proven to be a useful memory management technique. As part of this work, we are interested in studying the trade-off between extent of sharing opportunities (compared to actual sharing potential) that can be identified and the overheads for doing the same. Our work is based on Kernel Virtual Machine (KVM) in Linux which in turn u...

Collective I/O Optimizations for Adaptive Mesh Refinement Data Writes on Lustre File System

Adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) applications refine small regions of a physical space. As a result, when AMR data has to be stored in a file, writing data involves storing a large number of small blocks of data. Chombo is an AMR software library for solving partial differential equations over block-structured grids, and is used in large-scale climate and fluid dynamics simulations. Chombo’s curr...
